Description of what the appointment covers

This appointment will cover the basics of taking an active, task-based approach to reading and note taking for PEC. This should help you i) identify a clear purpose for your reading at the Prepare and Engage stage  ii) identify the most important sections of the reading that you need to focus on, iii) develop a better understanding of the material you are reading, and iv) create a more concise, revision-ready set of notes for each unit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Supported Discussion Group Sessions

How many students will be in this session?

Any number from one to six.

How long is the session?

As with a standard one-to-one study skills appointment, the slot is for up to 45 minutes.

Where do the discussion groups take place?

All discussion group sessions take place online on Microsoft Teams.

Apart from the number of students, what is the difference between a one-to-one appointment and a supported discussion group session?

A group appointment is more structured than an individual appointment, and there is some advice and guidance provided at the start of the session, followed by Q&A and discussion. If you want to discuss a very personal issue, or you have complex requirements, then an individual appointment might be more suitable for you.

Why might I book a supported discussion group session rather than a one-to-one or a drop in?

  • You might be able to book yourself onto a discussion group session more quickly than a one-to-one.
  • You might want the opportunity to talk about your issues with fellow students as well as a Student Learning Developer; hearing other students’ thoughts about the topic could give you some useful new perspectives and allow you to benefit from peer support.
  • You might want a bit of structured input on the topic at the start of the session to help put your issue in context

How should I prepare for my supported discussion group session?

You'll need to have your microphone working and it would help if you have your camera on as well, although if you prefer not to, that is also fine.

To get the most out of the session, it would be helpful to think about the topic briefly beforehand, and jot down a few issues you want to discuss or questions you want to ask.
